		<description>The difference is the sheer volume of calls - a telemarketing company with VoIP and a powerful voice server could generate tens of thousands of calls per hour - but only need 10 or 15 operators to handle the connected calls.

Given that the highest costs in telemarketing are the staff, this radically reduces costs. Of course the downside as you have noted is that it is entirely impersonal, so I bet the overall response rates (sales per dial made) are considerably lower than if each call was made by a real live human being. 

Automated Telemarketing Systems like this seem more popular in the United States - I for one hope that they do not make a significant impact in the UK, because I personally do not like being called by a machine!
